Skitch

skitch_iconSkitch, like Evernote, is a program I find myself using everyday. It is a great tool to have in your arsenal for visually communicating between people. Now, there are robust ways you can use Skitch in business for workflow annotations and feedback but I am going to stick to how I use it and why I find its simplicity so useful and powerful.

It is instantly on and can run easily in the background for quick screen-grabs and annotations. All your work is saved in the cloud to a folder in Evernote for future viewing – you may not value this until you really needed as I have experienced. It works very well in Desktop, iPad and iPhone (or mobile) versions allowing you to have a screenshot tool with a consistent user experience across all your devices. It is simple. The interface, the tools and the output requires little instructions and does virtually everything you need in a simple easy to follow format.

There are a lot of screenshot and annotation tools (and plugins) out there. I personally recommend you give Skitch a try. What do you have to loose? It’s free! For more on Skitch visit: http://evernote.com/skitch/

Addicted 2 iPad Accessories

I am without a doubt addicted to what you can combine with your iPad. I have done everything from putting silicone feet on my iPad to sporting a full magnetic detachable keyboard. I was not quite as bad with my iPad 1, but there is so much more to choose from with my “out dated” iPad 2 still being an accepted form factor in the accessory market.

bambooI was totally sucked into the coolness of a Bamboo Stylus solo that I finally purchased one. And I do admit it is the best I have tried, although I like the looks and technology of Adonit Jot Pro (they use them in this Penultimate video).

I suppose if I were more artistic which I have always aspired to be I would enjoy it more. But I find myself jotting notes more than sketching things out and it is difficult to do this when you can’t really rest you palm on the iPad. However if you are in the market, there are a lot to choose from. I recommend this review from The Verge to get you started.

Then there are cases. Cases are things that you can waste a lot of money on if you don’t do your research and check out what other friends or co-workers are sporting. But beware, just when you find one you like another will pop up. Until the iPad 2 form factor becomes obsolete, there will continue to be a lot of options out there. My dilema is that I love the light feeling of the iPad being naked but I have not become proficiant at typing on glass. I think this is more of an issue on my iPad than iPhone. And when on business trips or traveling in general, it is really nice to be able to have a keyboard you can use quickly and accurately. Here are a couple cases I am currently sporting.

The Magnetic Snap Case by ncaseipad3magneticsnapcaseblack01
This handy snap on hard shell fits onto the back of your iPad 2 or 3. It has two magnet strips in the back that work with your Apple Smart Cover. Not an all-in-one solution but a nice add on if you already have a Smart Cover. What I like about this case is that it gives you a couple more positions to rest your iPad for viewing and typing. It is relatively light weight, affordable and cleans up easy. I also like that when you fold your Smart Cover around to the back, the magnets hold it in place. This I consider a lucky find, nabbing it in an airport coming home from Boston. In fact, the only thing I don’t like about this solution combo, outside of typing on glass, is having to use my Smart Cover that can be annoying sometimes with the hinge magnetics. I also want to purchase more covers because I like them clean and looking like new. I know, it’s a sickness.

The Ultrathin Keyboard Cover by Logitech
LogitechKeyboardI did a lot of looking around before I settled on this one primarily because it is an investment at the $99 range. My brother and one of my co-workers both have a Zagg model that is similar however the iPad on theirs is fixed in place. To be fair, Zagg has models that are two piece, use a Logitech keyboard and even have backlight keys. But something for me just wasn’t clicking.

The Ultrathin boasted low weight, slick design, full qwerty keyboard with special iPad keys to boot, long lasting Bluetooth connection life and it would work the way your Smart Cover does by magnetically “clicking” into place. However the deal closer was the fact that the Ultrathin model in three colors were being sold in both Apple’s online and retail stores. For typing and interacting with, especially with the keys made custom for the iPad, I am loving it. As far as the combo working together I am still getting used to it and may end up using a neoprene sleeve for travel. Which won’t be bad as a base since the keyboard does not have feet to keep it from scratches. Although when combining technologies like these I wonder why? I have a MacBook Air for crying out loud?!? But then I can’t take the screen off my Air and turn it into a touch screen device.

When the Family is Away

It has only been four days now by myself while my family is up north on spring break and I am going a little batty. I think the dogs are too. I am used to the constant sounds of every television in the house being on at full volume. Everyone screaming over the top of the TV’s to argue or just communicate with each other. The never ending indoor basketball smashing against the door hoop. The tattle tailing antics of two brothers locked in battle and friendship. And me trying to find a quiet corner to possibly check my Instagram or watch a video on my iPad. Now that I have all the peace and quiet I could ever hope for I am going stir crazy. Figures.

Hyper Spastic Lab and Baying Beagle

Another day at Avila’s Dog Beach (fishermans beach). The perfect day to relax and soak up the sun. But I couldn’t, I had work to do. I had to consistantly hurl a tennis ball into the ocean while unsuccessfully shushing a beagle with the worst bay/bark imaginable. It was relaxing spending time with the girls and stressful all the same by their annoying behavior. But in the end who can really complain when they got to spend time at the beach with their dogs.

Evernote – One of my favorite tools

EvernoteEvernote is a tool that I use every day. Probably second only to e-mail. If you haven’t heard of it or tried it yet – do it! It’s a free service for the basic features that are rich in what is offered. I use it to store anything I want to recall. Notes, receipts, images, whiteboard sketches, sticky notes, napkin sketches, business cards, web articles and clippings, wish lists, travel planning, tweets, blog postings, book ideas or writing… the list goes on and on. And the search capability of this application is outstanding. It will find a word in your hand written note, business card or PDF. For the Premium Services it will even search within closed documents.

And let’s not forget important things you need to update or recall in a moment. In todays age of cell phones and tablets there are very few times you are without a mobile device. Evernote has an app for just about every phone or device operating system on the market. If you need your license, passport, insurance card, medication list – boom, right there. On your phone, tablet, computer or on any other computer via the Web interface. It also has text encryption for those important items you want a little extra protection on.

Here is a short video on some of its many features:

Evernote also makes many complimentary applications like Skitch, Penultimate and more. Bottom line, I highly recommend you check it out and the next time you can’t remember that thing you did at the place with that person, you won’t have to – Evernote will have it stored and ready to recall for you. Apple Earpods

MDREX38IPBLKRecently I lost my second pair of Sony Ear Buds (with volume and mute). Between kids and life I just seem to loose these as soon as I buy them. I love them, they are soft, fit nicely and are a decent price. I should clarify I have had Bose, Klipsch, Apple and Beats in-ear headphones and nothing seems to fit my ears comfortably, especially on long flights. If you know these brands, you know they are not cheap. At least the Sony’s, as much as I loose them are affordable.

81PUfpUN0ML._SL1500_Although I have a nice pair of large noise cancelation Beats, I find I need a pair of simple in-ear buds for the car, work and travel for convenience. Try getting a large pair of beats to fit in your Cocoon CPG10BK GRID-IT Organizer (geeky but well worth the money).

On an evening stroll to our local San Luis Obispo Apple store killing time picking up my son from basketball (always a dangerous store to enter), I decided I needed a new simple pair of earbuds and would see if they had my favorite Sony’s. I have a trip to New York coming up but mainly I wanted to watch an episode of Blue Bloods in the car while I waited for my son.

After perusing the multitude of cool brands the Apple Store had in full stock the range seemed to be between my desired headphones at around $40-$50 through $100+. Knowing my experience in the past I wasn’t willing to make a leap to something that may not work out and would become yet another orphaned pair or donation to my kids.

urlJust then I can across the Apple Earpods  (w/remote and mic), clearly a new design of the old standard that became so famous (and never fit right in my ear). The new design was intriguing and at a $29 price point I decided to give them a try. I have to say I am impressed. They pack a lot of sound and the design fits well in my ear without much strain or soreness during long periods of time at my desk or watching a movie. Given the lower price I think I made the right call especially considering my Sony’s may show up immediately after buying this pair. I have a trip coming up to New York so we shall see how they do for extended use. Everybody’s ear is different so you have to find a pair that fits yours well. But for now I am very happy with my purchase.

Dog Day Afternoon

After a week of guilt and sad puppy dog looks I decided to dedicate most of Saturday to my dogs. 20120728-133842.jpgSadie my Lab and Molly my Beagle. We started with a trip to Laguna Lake Park in San Luis Obispo that has an off-leash dog play area. This park is absolutely amazing and vast. There are tons of trails, frisbee golf, a children’s play area, views of the lake and hills and plenty of ducks and other nesting birds willing to take your handouts. It can get a little windy even on a sunny day so I recommend a hoodie but otherwise it is beautiful scenery and a dog’s paradise (assuming yours plays well with others).

Here are some quick shots off my iPhone of my girl Sadie:

photo 1photo 2photo 3Then it was off to our second park of the day, this time at Avila Beach. Avila Beach has a wonderful off-leash dog park area down the road from the main beach area, technically called Fishermans Beach. On this day we spent our time on the far right because there was a seal pup who was sick and onshore. Luckily for the little guy a rescue team was onsite within the hour to deliver some help. Here are some iPhone candides of the girls:

photo 4photo 5All considered it was a great way to spend an afternoon. Sadie swam until she could barely walk and Molly ran and bayed at just about everyone (her Beagle baying is not the most attractive sound – here is an example of a similar one - hers is more like a screech). And by the end, we were ALL exhausted. My big tip of the day is if you are taking your dog to the beach with fine sand and they are a swimmer, be ready for at least two rounds of washing to get all the sand out, especially if they have an undercoat. -Ben

Bonsai Weekend

Last weekend I decided I needed a project that would give me a little moment of zen. So I settled on making a Bonsai from a starter juniper. I knew I wanted some moss too, so I found some Irish moss to go with it. This would provide the illusion of grass and even some baby flowers.

Roots

Once I had everything in place, I needed to rinse out the soil and trim the roots.

Then came the potting. I chose large rock on the bottom and then a layer of lava rock before planting the juniper in soil. This will help with drainage and reduce the chance of mold.

Once in place I began trimming and shaping the Bonsai. Then filled in the top layer with moss, large rock and a decorative chair.

It will require a lot of care to keep hearty but was very fun to create.
